Hispanic/Latino Cultural Competency
Knowledge Gap:
Lack of knowledge regarding the Hispanic/Latino culture and how this effects health behaviors among Hispanic/Latino patients.
Target Audience
The target audience includes all healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals who would like to learn about cultural competency and how it pertains to their respective profession.
Objectives
1. Describe the history and background of the Hispanic/Latino population in the US and in Northwest Arkansas.
2. Identify cultural characteristics of Hispanic/Latino patients that may influence their health behaviors.
3. Use cross-cultural communication skills to address the health concerns of Hispanic/Latino patients.

Biographical Info Carolina Vargas, BA was born in Arizona and is of Latin descent. She has an Associate of Science degree from Northwest Arkansas Community College and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice with minors in business, human development and family sciences from the University of Arkansas. She is experienced in assisting displaced workers, immigrants, homeless adults, and children through various agencies. Carolina is fluent in Spanish and has numerous connections in Northwest Arkansas and surrounding areas.
