Knowledge Gap: 
Lack of knowledge regarding health care providers’ ability to provide culturally competent care to patients from cultures different from their own. 
 

Target Audience
The target audience includes all healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals who would like to learn about cultural competency and how it pertains to their respective profession.

Objectives

1.     Identify various ways in which inadequate language service utilization can affect patient care. 

2.     Identify at least 1 alternative option within their organization to using patient family/friends as interpreters 

3.     Apply self-assessment strategies to identify and address bias/stereotypes/discriminatory beliefs and practices. 

4.     Employ various strategies to overcome barriers to cross-cultural communication.

Biographical Info
Sarah Moore, RN, MS, CHES has been a registered nurse in Northwest Arkansas for 6 years. She has worked in both the mental health and acute care settings and has spent the last 4 years providing chronic disease prevention and management education to patients. She recently completed her Masters in Science in community health promotion and has great deal of experience working with members of the community to plan and implement health improvement programs.
