Program Overview:
OB morbidity and mortality are on the rise in the US due to a number of factors (obesity, increasing maternal age, co-morbidities like diabetes / CV disease). With a patient population that is higher risk, OB emergencies due to postpartum hemorrhage, eclamptic seizure, breech presentation, and shoulder dystocia are increased. Obese patients are at greater risk for delivery of an infant with breech presentation and are at higher risk of pp hemorrhage. Diabetic patients are at higher risk of shoulder dystocia. Patients with CV disease are at risk for eclamptic seizure and pp hemorrhage. In Arkansas, Obesity, Diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are well above the national average and as such, these types of emergencies are more likely. In a smaller hospital, these emergencies will happen, but may not happen with a high enough frequency that the team will have routine practice. When the team is not practiced and ready for intervention, mistakes are more likely to happen.

To address this patient safety need, the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) developed OB Simulation Drill guidelines which are the basis for the content of the drills in this activity.

Moderator: William Greenfield, MD

Overall goal(s) for the educational activity.

  1. Participants will work as a team to implement simulated patient interventions for OB emergencies.
  2. Participants will demonstrate a coordinated effort to resolve emergent OB situations.
  3. Participant will translate team simulation to practice which will improve patient safety.
