Program Overview:
This presentation will give an overview of the basic pharmacology of opiods, and their appropriate and safe use in the palliative care population.

Objectives:  

  1. Review the basics of opioid prescribing.
  2. Review how to use the WHO ladder in opioid decision-making.
  3. Discuss common side effects of opioids.
  4. Review DEA and Arkansas Board of Medicine regulations.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of opioid prescribing with practice problems.

Speaker Bio:
Sarah Harrington, MD, FAAHPM is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the UAMS Department of Internal Medicine, in the Hem/ONC Divisoin. Dr. Harrington is also the Medical Director of the UAMS Palliative Care Program, and Chief of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System's Palliative Care Program.
